Herbs are mainly used for their savoury and aromatic properties. Along with garnishing food they suit many medical purposes. The part of the herb that is generally used is the green or flowering part, used either fresh or dried.
Herbs can either be perennials such as rosemary, sage and thyme or annuals such as basil and dill. On the larger scale they can be trees such as the bay tree. Herbs can make delicious tea by simply adding boiling water to the dried leaves such as mint or chamomile.
The medical use of herbs dates back as far as 5000 BC and the Chinese are famous for their herbal medicine, to this day herbs are still used in modern pharmaceuticals.
Putting all that to one side there is nothing better than fresh herbs growing on your windowsill, balcony or garden.
